When Times Get Tough
When times get "tough," see it as an opportunity to challenge
yourself. Stretch your God-given, imagination. Marvel in new
creations.
Beaumont, Texas. Home of my good friends, Darlinda Wheeler and Gary
Gallien. They're siblings. Like thousands of others, they are
challenged by the aftermath of Hurricane Rita. Although they were
allowed to return to their respective homes, there was no electricity,
and the municipal water was unfit for drinking. The two spent their
first candle-lit, night swatting mosquitos and waving makeshift
fans in an unimaginable heat.
"We're burning up in here," Gary told me, referring to
the triple-digit temperature and humidity. "But, we're alive; and we
are blessed."
Exactly 24 hours later, I called and checked in with them again.
Darlinda happily reported that they received allocations of food and
bottled water from Emergency Services. But, what was that buzzing
noise in the background?
"Oh, I didn't tell you? Gary (a seasoned mechanic) hooked up a fan
to a car battery. It's sitting in the front window of the house.
Fran, it is so cool in here!"
My eyes welled up with tears. A stretched imagination; a marvelous
creation.
Indeed. Gary, you, Darlinda, and your entire family ... are truly
blessed.
